Mini Moderns Live Brief

Mini Moderns pattern with a story.

A Generational Journey of courage !

Encouraged by a generational heritage of migration. I have reflected on my own journey from Birmingham to Swansea. Gaining inspiration from buildings, Urdu language and foliage to communicate placement and south Asian diaspora.

I created two collections the Hausla /courage collection. The main design titled ‘let them go where they feel inclined’ / ‘ Jehan ji jaya keren’ is a three layer screen print featuring a journey around Swansea, which shows a building some shoes of serendipity and foliage which I have come across on my walks around the city. This represents the chance of a journey and it is filled patterns inspired by the Maharaja and son painting 1847 from Lahore. The details
of this design have created sub collections titled Khana Badosh / nomad collection.

The second design tile for wallpaper is from the ‘Baashinda / resident’ collection which depicts a modern and colourful take on a Tudor Bethan style house which was part of my family and common to see where I grew up in Birmingham. The flora from the design went on to create a sub collection titled ‘Diaspora Flora.’

What I like about these designs is there’s a sense of fixed stability within the structures of the house but that there’s a flexibility and movement of the flora. It shows that placement is a place of growth and like the roots of a flower keeps us grounded we can spread out and grow blooming in places we wouldn’t think we would.

It has been an excellent brief and it was amazing to be chosen as a ‘runner up’ by mini moderns and be gifted with their time and design wisdom throughout the project to help achieve this collection.
